What is ‘wellness’ to you?
To me, wellness is a way of life. It is making conscious choices to live a better, healthier, happier, more fulfilled life. It is not just a physical state (having a fit healthy body or eating healthy food). It is also how we feel inside, our emotional and spiritual well being, as well as our relationships with ourselves and others. This can mean a very different thing to different people. Your "path" to wellness is likely very different to mine. What is common though is that we are both constantly learning and improving and aiming to reach our fullest potential, to have a sense of joy, passion and purpose in our lives.
Tell us about your wellness journey
Back in my 20s, I was completely lost. I went from university to working a very demanding job in the City. My self care practice involved lots of alcohol, coffee and cigarettes, late night parties or ordering pizzas to the office when working into the early hours. I used to think I was looking after myself when I would go to the gym or have a fruit salad for breakfast. If I looked good on the outside, and had a busy social life, then I thought I was living a fulfilled life. I used to suffer from constant bloating, migraines, stress, fatigue, bad skin, you name it. It is crazy to think how much I have changed. I am now 34, I do not drink alcohol, I eat a mostly whole food plant based diet, I am a mother to a beautiful little girl and I have finally found balance in my life.
What is your inspiration behind your protein blend range?
A few years ago, I became very interested in the power of superfoods. I used to think that I was always tired because my job was so stressful and I worked such long hours. Every weekend I struggled to get up and would sleep until lunch time. Then I started changing the way I ate, eliminated alcohol and foods that did not make me feel great and started introducing superfoods into my diet. I used maca, raw cacao, acai berry powder, matcha, and others. I was amazed at how it affected my energy levels. Within weeks of starting to incorporate these magical foods into my diet, I was full of energy. I started waking up at 5am every day to do an hour training in the gym before work and I felt energised and alive all day.
As I started training more, I wanted to find a pure protein powder to incorporate into my diet. However the only proteins on the market were the kind that came in big plastic tubs with incredibly long ingredient lists where I could not even pronounce most of these let alone actually have any idea what they were. I knew that I was not the only one looking for clean products and that there was a need for such a product here in the UK. That's when the idea behind Pure Blend Company was born.
What are your favourite flavours that you sell?
We have two ranges - Whey and Vegan (white hemp) and they both come in four flavours:
Maca & Madagascan Vanilla
Matcha Green Tea & Madagascan Vanilla
and Acai berry, Blueberry and Camu Camu
It is actually hard to choose a favourite as I love them all. On its own as a shake I love the Raw Cacao, added to my smoothie or porridge my current favourite is the berry flavour.
What is you fave recipe you can make using your blend?
Ok, this is going to seem like the simplest recipe but it is so delicious you have to try! Blend 1 1/2 cups of your favourite nut milk,
2 large medjool dates,
1tbsp peanut butter
and 2 tbsps of our Raw Cacao protein blend.
Talk us through how your blend flavour design process?
First we spent a long time finding the best ingredients that we would use in our blends. For example, our whey protein is very unique. It is produced directly from milk via cold process filtration (almost all whey proteins on the market are produced at very high temperatures from what is called "whey liquid", a by-product of cheese making). The resulting protein is so much cleaner and better tasting, as well as of course far superior in terms of amino acid profile due to lack of heat process.
Our whey is also lactose free and because it does not have cheese peptides and enzymes usually present in whey liquid, it is much gentler on the digestive system. We went through a similarly vigorous process of choosing our superfoods. Once we had the right ingredients, we focused on creating the blends by varying the quantities of superfoods, protein and tiny amounts of stevia to get the taste just right!
What is a typical day in the life of Pure Blend Co?
Launching Pure Blend Co coincided with us having our daughter so as you can imagine the early months were very hectic with no particular routine. We were just trying to combine launching our brand with being fully present at home and spending time with our daughter (I can tell you that I found this extremely challenging!)
Now that our daughter is 18 months old, it is a lot easier to find some time away from her to focus on the business. I still work a lot from home, but I now tend to do all my emails and other admin away from home so that I can focus solely on the business and then return home and be fully present for my daughter. No each day is the same, generally it is a combination or emails, calls, responding to customers, packing and sending orders, checking and updating our social media, attending events and collaborating with bloggers.
What workouts do you love doing?
I tend to go through phases with my workouts where I do one thing over and over, then I get bored, try something else and then do only that for a while. I used to go to reformer pilates classes all the time (at my favourite Heartcore studio), then I started running daily as I loved the effect running had on my mind. At the moment I am into training at the gym. I love combining high intensity interval training with resistance. I also love yoga but I am constantly trying to search for a good class...any recommendations? :)
What tunes do you love playing when you are working out?
I am loving listening to audiobooks when working out. I find with the business and family life, I never have time to read (which I love!) so this gives me a chance to fit some reading in.
Where are your fave places to workout or ideal wellness location?
Yoga in Bali overlooking rice paddies. Or going for a swim in the ocean before sunset. I don't get to practice this often but when i do it is magical.
What tips do you have for a successful mindset when it comes to health?
Learn what works for your body, experiment, try different things. It is a constantly evolving process. Connect with yourself, include small self care rituals into your life. We create our lives, with our daily thoughts, words and actions. Switching off our phones and being present in our lives helps too!
Who are your fitness inspirations or ambassadors you would love to work with?
We love collaborating with fitness and wellness bloggers who share our philosophy. At the moment our favourite blogger is Valeria Lipovetsky (@valerialipovetsky). She is such an inspiration for women - she is a mother of two boys, a business woman, a youtuber with over 500,000 followers, a successful model and a qualified holistic nutritionist. How she manages to do it all and always look so incredible is a mystery but what I love most about her is her message of self care and self love (she has many videos about this on YouTube). That and she loves our protein powders :)
