What To Do When You Feel Overwhelmed: The Flexible Mind

It is very easy for our minds to become overloaded and overwhelmed. We are in the age of information, constantly bombarded by social media, news and other information from various sources.  The mind is something to be nurtured, and when stressful situation occur, you'll want your mind to be adaptive to change, something that can learn and grown from each new situation. 

 

 

Doing this doesn't come easy to most people. It takes conscious work, and a balance of mind stimulation and relaxation needs to be achieved. Keeping our mind happy and healthy is not a one time singular action.  It's the result of constant observation, self assessment and motion. We need to take it upon ourselves to elicit change if we notice ourselves becoming overloaded in a certain area.

 

How to have a flexible mind

 

Many people now recognise they don’t get enough “quiet” time in their mind, and take scheduled technology breaks, such as not using their phone in the evening, or not using their phone during a holiday. This is an active solution to a issue detected in their wellbeing.

 

In order to detect these issues, regular self reflection and lifestyle assessment is key. This is a constant daily process, not a once a year assessment. Some find using a daily journal assists in noticing issues of lifestyle imbalance. The environment in which we place ourselves daily is of paramount importance to our mental health and wellbeing.

 

 

Undoubtedly, there are times in life when plans need to be flexible and things need to alter. All too often we get tied to our plans and ideologies, and become worried about changing our routines that we know usually work.

 

Often our failure to adjust a plan when circumstances change is what causes issues. For instance, if you usually are off technology in the evening, but a big life change such as a house move is going on, you may need to be in a position of breaking your own rules. Keeping things flexible is never a negative, but it must always be recognised that actions have consequences. That extra mind stimulation could perhaps be offset in another area. Maybe technology use will have to increase, but going on a daily walk amongst nature could be an increase set up to offset that. These adjustments are always based upon experience and self awareness.

 

 

Keeping your mindset flexible is always a key component to solid emotional wellbeing. Keeping flexible in your approach to the stresses life throws at you will allow you to positively react to change.

 


So, ensure your mindset is developing in it's flexibility by recognising when your lifestyle needs more balance.

Assess how you are responding to stress each day and when you notice traits in yourself that show you are feeling overwhelmed, have a prepared list of actions you can do to relax and unwind.

Overtime, this will help train your mind to adapt when the signs of stress appear.

Be willing to react to changes and adjust your lifestyle accordingly, working to get that balance of mind stimulation and relaxation.
