April 23, 2018

Hey!

Each month we showcase a top practitioner in the industry to get an inside scoop on what they do and how they do it. We always aim to get you access to the best information and the people who own it!!

This week we are talking to Life By Equipe Content Writer - Julie Gooderick. Click on her name at the top of this article for her article collection!

Julie has worked as a strength and conditioning (S&C) coach for over 10 years, working with athletes of various standards across a range of sports.

Julie began her career working in rehab, at MK Dons FC. Following this, she spent 3 years working with elite junior tennis players; after success in this role was selected to develop and run the scholarship programme at a prestigious private school. Julie now spends her time in this role and at the University of East London, where she is head coach of the football and volleyball scholarship programmes.

The S&C industry is notoriously competitive, how did you get you started?

I did my first degree in sports therapy so I initially worked in the rehab side of competitive sport. I think this gave me a good background and understanding of the demands of sport, biomechanics and recovery. Following this, I did my UKSCA exam and whilst working with tennis athletes, I completed my Masters degree in S&C.

What is your wellness philosophy?

Get the basics right and be consistent! Everyone these days loves overcomplicating programmes, when in reality most people benefit from getting their fundamentals right. Work all the key movement patterns - Squat, lunge, push, pull, brace, rotate.

What does a day in the life of Julie look like?

It obviously starts with a cappucino!  Then head into work, different athletes will be in throughout the day so each hour is normally pretty varied. In down time, programmes get written or reviewed, or that is time to catch up and review with other coaches or medical staff. Then usually its home, walk the dog and unwind!

Since our interview, Julie has become a new mumma. So her daily routine now includes playtime, feeds and epic nappy changes!

What’s your favourite breakfast?

I love a nut butter and banana sandwich! Protein, fats and carbs all in one plus very tasty! Followed by some berries.

Any top tips for motivation?

Record your progress. Its not always easy to see but when you write stuff down you can see how far you've come.

Set goals and share this with others. Be consistent and don't keep changing your goals - move on once you've achieved something. And never compare yourself to others - focus on yourself.
